FIVE TO ELEVEN YEARS

The National Curriculum for children of this age is also an important one as it is during these years that our children undergo two key assessments. It is important to know that the National Curriculum has compulsory key subjects in Key Stages 1 & 2. We have stressed the word compulsory as some parents/carers and children have been lead to believe, that some subjects covered during this process are optional and they are not. “Your child will take the same compulsory National Curriculum subject in key stages 1 & 2”.

These are: English, Mathematics, science, Design & Technology, Information & Communication Technology (ICT), History, Geography, Art & design, Music & Physical education.

It is reported that “Schools also have to teach religious education”.

Again not enough mention or attention is given to publishing the National Curriculum and all components within it. We as parents and carers are asked to assist our child/ren through out most of their education life and we can only do this if we are informed. From our experiences we have tried to simplify the National Curriculum for this age group.

We as others have been through Key Stage 1 with our child and we are embarking on the final stages of Key 2. Those parents and children who are about to begin learning the compulsory subjects, we would advise that you be familiar with the process before it begins. For some parents/carers and children these stages can be and will be stressful and pressurised, especially when we as parents/carers have not disciplined our selves in ensure that homework is done at all times. It is also important that children are taught the art of being disciplined in doing their homework and other work that will be given.

We appreciate and share in having to juggle many things and support our children in learning. This support we must give. This will ensure that our child/ren achieve or pass the recommended level(s) for each Key stage and other activities.

We trust that you will receive the dedicated support that our child received from teachers and helpers at the school attended, as one of the many gifted and talented children.

Key stage 1 is implemented in years 1 & 2

Key stage 2 is implemented in years 3 through to 6

Download the Key stage 1 & 2 assessment forms to give our children every opportunity to pass. As they say to be for warned is to be for armed.

AFTER SCHOOL CLUBS/SURGERIES

We would strongly recommend the use of these facilities and we would encourage children to attend them as we have seen the benefits and rewards that our child has received in attending. I myself have attended the maths after school club as methods used in some areas of mathematics have changed and to assist our child with homework I attended and it was great fun and it did build a bond between us.

We also know that teachers are encouraged by parents attending it makes them know that they are not alone and that they are supported and that the extra efforts that they put in to support and encourage our children are appreciated.

Let’s continue to use and support this facility.
