It is reported that as of 2006, schools are required to identify their gifted and talented pupils as part of the annual School Census. What is the definition of Gifted & Talented? Directgov provides us with this meaning. “Gifted learners are those who have abilities in one or more academic subjects, such as maths and English. Talented learners are those who have particular abilities in sport, music, design or creative and performing arts.” We are delighted to report that the school that our child attends have identified their gifted and talented children and have been supporting these children for approx 5-6 years if not longer. We are also pleased to inform you that our child has been and is still being supported, by the primary school attended. The school is providing higher and more challenging work during lessons. Also support has been given to our child outside of school hours i.e. after school club/surgeries. Once again we would like to praise teaching staff for supporting our child and for mentoring our child and other students for entry exams for a new school. If you notice that your child is gifted and or talented and the school that your child is attending has not identified the gift and or talent, please do not hesitate to speak to the school as there should already be a support mechanism in place. If the school that your child/ren attends does not yet have a gifted and talented coordinator, you could find that your local authority has a gifted and talented coordinator. Please refer to the local authorities section. Other support mechanisms are the National Association for gifted Children (NAGC) – set up to run an independent parent support network and to help parents resolve disputed with schools and location authorities. The National Academy for gifted and talented Youth (NAGTY) – Set up be the government to give support and opportunities for gifted and talented children.
